Kicking summer blues at Bangkok Royal

Kicking summer blues at Bangkok Royal

We've made it past two of the three prongs of summer — Memorial Day and Independence Day. All that's left is to work our way to Labor Day, and maybe work in a vacation before then.

That's a good news/bad news scenario. When I was in school, summer could not go by slow enough. I can still feel the deep resentment toward the stores that seemed to advertise back-to-school supplies by the middle of June. These days, though, I begin looking forward to the beginning of football season and the hope of cooler weather long before we reach the 4th of July.

I'm going to go glass-half-full on this one and be happy that there are still plenty of those lazy summer evening things that we seem to be in short supply once fall and spring are in full swing.

I've had a couple of them lately.

Not one, but two recent nights out on the town began at Bangkok Royal. From there, my group of friends progressed through downtown. On the first occasion, we were struck with the notion to consume a chocolate bag at Diamond Backs, so that's what we did. Then we walked from there to Barnett's Pub for a nightcap.

Then another separate group of friends kindly celebrated my birthday last week. This time, we made a group decision to go from Bangkok to treat ourselves to froyo at Oso's Oh So Good Frozen Yogurt. And, again, from there to Barnett's, which by the way carries my go-to Scotch, The Balvenie.

The obvious theme here is that our downtown can be the canvas for a fun night out. The underlying moral of the story is that it's a great time of year to build on old friendships and make new ones.

Here's to summer, hot as it is, it still serves a purpose.
