As we get into the hot, sweaty thick of summer, I'll admit I'm having trouble staying positive. The heat drains me and I know that cooler weather is so far away and that kind of depresses me. But I will endeavor to hold my head up and think happy thoughts.
The best one I know comes courtesy of my friend Dr. Shawn Skeen who says that God gave Texans the heat because He knew we could handle it.
In an effort to help us all handle the heat, here's 10 fun things to do in Waco in the summertime:
- Finish the day with frozen yogurt on the porch at Oso's Oh So Good Frozen Yogurt at sunset (which happens around 11:30 these days; just kidding — I don't think Oso's is open that late).
- Sit by the pool even if it means sneaking into an apartment complex pool. Wait, no, especially if it means sneaking into an apartment complex pool.
- Drink cold beer in an air-conditioned room — The Dancing Bear, Shorty's, Barnett's, B.J.'s Brewhouse.
- Play porch games and down snow cones at Bahama Buck's.
- Make a spontaneous trip to see the two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers. Or …
- Watch the Rangers at one of the many fine local eateries that feature sports on television (see also: list of places to drink beer in an air-conditioned room). Or …
- Go to a Little League game. There's only about a million of them in this town every summer. Or …
- Play in a softball game. Notice how the last few all involve baseball or softball? That's called a theme. That's enough of it, though.
- Play an early morning round of golf or hit range balls after 7 p.m. Sure it's hot outside, but golf can still be enjoyed. And, finally …
- Treat yourself to a scoop of Blue Bell Ice Cream or even better, a shake at Captain Billy Whizzbang's.
