I've been trying to eat healthier lately.
I mean it. I've really been trying. Mostly. Like eating almonds or trail mix for dinner kind of trying. But of course, part of this gig involves making the rounds and that's hard to do and maintain a high level of healthy eating.
Case in point: Fried-day.
I think maybe the spicy chicken tenders with hummus instead of fries from D's Mediterranean Grill is about as good as I can do on Fried-day. D's offers a meal that is on Eat Well Waco's list of healthy dining-out options in our town. And I blogged about it back in the fall.
But the gyro plate wouldn't fit into Fried-day. Enter spicy chicken tenders.
D's journey to becoming Waco's favorite Mediterranean restaurant is an interesting one. Mr. Issa, the owner, opened his restaurant in a space that was formerly a convenience store and he began serving chicken tenders.
Issa would make Mediterranean dishes on request when customers clued in that they were available. Eventually the demand for gyros and baklava and the like grew so much that Issa changed the name of his restaurant.
And that's how D's Chicken Delight became D's Mediterranean Grill.
One more bite: It's always nice to visit with Mr. Issa when I go into D's Mediterranean Grill. On this Fried-day we discussed plans for D's neighborhood. The city is planning some extensive and supposedly impressive renovations for that area of town. More on this subject to come.
