Among several truths by which I strive to live life is this: watching sports on television, especially with friends, is ALWAYS a good idea.
I've never watched a game on TV and afterwards thought "What am I doing with my life?" And I've tested the boundaries. Believe me.
But in case you think spending Monday night watching Monday Night Football, or all day Saturday or Sunday watching college or NFL football, is a little bit of a waste of time, then let me put your mind at ease. As of this past weekend, The Dancing Bear Pub is giving you a way to watch football all season long and feel as though you are working toward an end goal.
The brain trust at The Dancing Bear came up with a new contest last week. It's basically a football-watching contest. All you have to do is show up and order a beer before the start of the fourth quarter of any game from Saturday until Monday to earn a point for that game.
For examples, if there are four televised football games during open hours at The Dancing Bear on Saturday, that's four possible points. There are two Sunday time slots during open hours at The Dancing Bear on Sunday, so that's two possible points. And finally, one more chance to earn a point on Monday night.
And since the Dallas Cowboys play the hated Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football this evening, tonight would be an excellent night to earn a point.
The football fan with the most points, once the Super Bowl participants have been decided, wins. The winner receives a Super Bowl party at The Dancing Bear. The party, I'm told, will include a keg of beer of the winner's choosing and a generous portion of pizza and nachos.
I'm not sure I've explained the contest perfectly here, but if you're interested, inquire with the bartenders. They're friendly and helpful.
Another great idea
If you're going to watch the Cowboys game tonight and you want to eat some pizza while doing so, why not support a local family in need in the process?
Shorty's Pizza Shack is holding a celebration for a local family whose daughter recently received a new heart. So anytime between noon today and 10 tonight, you can help them celebrate with a $20 suggested ticket donation that will get you two slices of pizza and a beverage. Proceeds from the event will go to help the family with ongoing medical expenses.

I realize I've just promoted two events at two different local establishments in this blog, but let me also point out that you can do both … easily. Just go celebrate at Shorty's and then make the short trip to The Dancing Bear in time to get entered into the contest before the start of the Monday Night Football game.
