The month in reviews: August

At the end of every month, I comb through all of the fantastic WacoFork reviews and pull out what I find to be some of the best individual lines.

I try to leave it pretty ambiguous by, where possible, extracting both the user's identity and the restaurant in question. However, one reviewer has risen to the top of the heap and must be named. It would be silly to act like mghamma isn't coming up with a bunch of the lines that I'm using in "Month in Reviews."

But … as of this week, mghamma has a challenger to her status as the witty, slashing swordswoman of the WacoFork reviews. And that challenger comes correct with with a ninja blade.

More on that at the end of the blog. We're currently a few reviews over the 500 remark. Remember, when we reach 1,000 reviews then we will give away another iPad2.

Adventures in open-mindedness

"It seemed like the sort of trendy, crowded, wannabe place designed to vacuum the money out of Baylor students' pockets while serving up mediocre drinks and worse food. … I was wrong. Wrongwrong...wrong WRONG! Well, mostly."

"The arroz con camarones a la criolla was OUTSTANDING, and I'm willing to come back for more."

Useful in Words With Friends

"The spanikopita (phillo dough layered with spinach mixture and baked) is a piece of heaven."

"My new favorite, I'd never heard of until walking in: Caerphilly. Be ready to walk out with at least one type of cheese you want to bring home!"

"For the main course, I had the pistachio covered salmon served on a bed of spinach and mushrooms that would bring tears of joy to your eyes. I was pleasantly stuffed, but yet the offer of homemade Tiramisu was impossible to say no to!"

Menu shenanigans

"Ironically, they have added a menu of the "off-menu items." Haven't tried any of them but they look promising."

"Anytime a place has a sandwich named after them on the menu, it must be tried at least once!"

Challenging for the throne (by ninjacoco)

"I can't think of anything in Waco that's as ridiculously cheesy as the Pop's Four Cheese pizza here. I'm talkin' gooey, wonderful, "does this ever quit stretching out into longer strings of cheese and actually separate itself from the rest of the pizza?" kind of cheesy."

"The stars are no longer there and they've had several major remodels and additions since I've started going to CG, but it's still a good local coffeehouse and thus, a place for the friendly geeks of Baylor to gather."

"I must admit that I'm jealous that the late night (1 a.m. to 4 a.m.) hours weren't around when I was a student. I could've used a decent latte in the wee hours of the morning back in the day."

A line from the reigning queen (mghamma)

"This place is full of nostalgia for me, and anyone who doesn't share that sentiment was either a) mistreated as a child or is b) severely out of touch with food that is truly awful for you."
