It's Saturday and there's football on television. This feels good.
Granted it's high school football and the teams are from Florida and Alabama, but it's football and soon there's going to be college football on my television on Saturdays. That makes me happy.
Around here, the high school football season is underway with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. Last night, I worked for the Waco Tribune-Herald, covering Robinson High School's season opening football game against Alvarado.
As promised, I perused the local food scene to bring together my love of local restaurants and football. Driving down Robinson Drive, I noted that the Rocket Cafe, along with several other Robinson restaurants seemed to be hopping.
But since it was the first high school football game of the year, I had to eat at the concession stand.
The good folks in the Robinson band booster club ran the Robinson concession stand and that meant firing up a grill for hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage on a stick sometime around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. Can you imagine standing over a grill for a couple of hours in 100-plus heat? That's the kind of commitment you see from football and band parents at these high school football stadiums.
I salute that.
As for the game, new Robinson quarterback Carson "Wyatt" Earp debuted by passing for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns. Sadly, it wasn't enough to get a victory for the Rockets as they couldn't quite answer Alvarado running back Wayne Onderdonck, who rushed for 362 yards in a 42-27 Indians win.
All right, that's all the football talk for this week. I did eat one of those hamburgers and it was char-grilled tastiness all the way through. Can't wait for next Friday.
