The Texas Rangers drubbed the Chicago White Sox, 10-6, on Tuesday night, using a 6-run 6th inning to get the deal done. I like this for several reasons, mostly because it gets the Rangers one win closer to however many wins it will take to make the playoffs.
For the purposes of this blog, however, the most important item of note is that the Rangers scored seven or more runs, kicking in a Papa John's offer. When the Rangers score 7 or more runs, Papa John's patrons can plug in the code Rangers7 in the promotional-code box and get 50 percent off the cost of their total order.
I opted for the offer at lunchtime on Wednesday. I'm happy to report that I ordered a large pizza with five toppings (banana peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, Canadian bacon and spicy Italian sausage), paid $11.93, ate half and saved half for a later meal.
That's a win on top of a win.
One more bite: Speaking of the Rangers and restaurants, the sixth inning in which the Rangers scored six runs is also the Sonic Slam inning. As such, a contestant wins a prize for a home run (something in the triple-digist range) and a grand prize (something in the five-digit range) for a grand slam. Well, Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre came to bat with the bases loaded in the sixth. White Sox pitcher Nate Jones then threw two wild pitches that allowed the Rangers to take an 8-4 lead. Then Beltre smashed a pitch over the wall in left field. So the Rangers led, 10-6, or the same as if Beltre had hit a grand slam. But instead of the Sonic Slam contestant winning $25,000, Tuesday night's contestant won $300. I wonder if he or she consoled him or herself with a Papa John's pizza at lunch today.
