The 1st annual Chipper Things/WacoFork Chess Tourney (insert chess pun here)

Sometimes life is a chess match.

This is not the most uplifting of metaphors because it means that sometimes we are all put in a position where it is completely necessary to be combative and manipulative. But that's just the way it is sometimes.

It's significantly more fun to think of sports as a chess match. Like when a baseball manager puts in a left-handed pinch-hitter to face a right-handed pitcher and then the opposing manager changes pitchers to use a lefty. Ok, I acknowledge that I find that to be fun, but only in the theoretical sense. I don't like sitting through pitching changes. Most people who aren't severe sports dorks probably don't even think that is an example of something that's a theoretically fun chess match.

So perhaps I should write it is almost always fun when a chess match is a chess match. No metaphors necessary. That's why we are teaming up with chipperthings.com to present the inaugural ChipperThings/WacoFork Chess Tournament.

And we want YOU to play. It doesn't matter if you're able to go toe to hard drive with Deep Blue or if you're not sure which direction a bishop is allowed to move. The tournament is tentatively set for late June, so you have time to learn the finer points.

The main thing the good folks at ChipperThings and WacoFork want is for you to come have a good time with us on a summer night.

We're hammering out details, which we will release in the near future. At the moment, we're planning to hold the event on a Sunday evening in late-June, probably at one of our town's fine pubs. This will mean that the competition will be for those chess players who are 21 or older. We're planning to have expert, novice and checkers brackets and we're getting close to making decision on how that will work. I suppose we're open to suggestions. We're also planning to have cash prizes, trophies and T-shirts.

Again, more details to follow in the near future.

For now, get excited. It's going to be a ton of fun. Those interested in signing up can email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
