Thank you Lord for Texas ... Uchiko (and East Side King)

I ran down to Austin on business on Tuesday. For real, business-related errands had to be run by two friends and me and, for the most part, we accomplished our goals and did so in an environmentally friendly way (i.e., carpooling).

Did we also play TopGolf and spend happy hour out Uchiko? Yes. We did.

The trip was way more productive than the mid-week trip I took to Austin last week during which I drove directly to The Grackle (where an East Side King truck was located), spent a couple of hours chatting with friends and drove directly home.

The two occasions helped me compile a new list of dishes you owe it to yourself to try. A couple of them are vegetable dishes, so consider this a vegetarian-friendly blog.

Here the are, listed by restaurant.

Uchiko:

  • Brussels sprouts (I don't know if I can properly describe what made these exceptional, but they changed the way I think about Brussels sprouts).
  • Bacon (on the menu, it just reads "bacon." but it's more like pork belly in a bowl with rice and a fried egg. It's in the picture).
  • Pork ribs.
  • Sake (Served in an over-pour box. I had sake a while back at Clay Pot, so maybe you don't need to drive to Austin for this one).

East Side King

  • La lengua tacos (fried beef tongue).
  • Kale and watermelon salad (with fried chicken skin mixed in with a phenomenal dressing).
  • Broccoli pops (see Brussels sprouts).
