It was good wasn't it, Einstein?

It was good wasn't it, Einstein?

The bagel doesn't need my endorsement. I realize that. The bagel is doing just fine no matter what I think.

A few weeks ago, I wrote in this space that I didn't see why anyone, given the choice between a donut and a bagel would choose a bagel. That sentiment sparked a mini firestorm of controversy known in certain circles as bagelgate.

That stated, I stopped into the Baylor student center this morning, where Einstein Bros recently opened up shop. Since I made my declaration that I saw no reason to pick a bagel over a donut, I heard it from the bagel lobby. I heard it loudly.

"You're crazy," they said. "A warm blueberry toasted bagel with cream cheese is nothing short of culinary perfection. It's as close to heaven as a person can get while living in this world."

This is how I remember it anyway. The bagel lobby is prone to hyperbole.

So I ordered a blueberry bagel. The nice lady behind the counter asked if I wanted it toasted. I said "yes." She asked if I wanted a smear on it. I assumed this meant cream cheese, so again I said "yes." She asked what kind of spread I wanted, so I chose plain cream cheese, guessing that the onion and chives might be kind of weird when combined with the blueberries.

And you know what? I loved it.

I'll admit that I loved it and might in fact be inclined to every now and then choose a bagel over a donut. See, I can admit when I'm wrong and I was wrong in this case.

I scoffed when I first heard Einstein Bros would be coming to the Baylor student center. I thought that a) I didn't want a bagel, and b) I sure wasn't going to venture into such a bastion of Baylordom to get one.

But, again, I was wrong. I can think of a lot of worse way to spend half an hour in the morning than parking at Common Grounds, taking a coffee to go, walking to the student center and enjoying an Einstein Bros bagel like I did this morning.
