First of all, I knew I was pressing my luck on Friday the 13th.
But people have been talking about the new Chinese/Mongolian grill restaurant: Vegas Buffet. With the move of our local Peter Piper Pizza a mile or so away to New Road and Franklin, this huge location opened up and the Vegas folks landed there. By the way, there are no slot machines.
The restaurant offers a grand variety of foods. You can expect your typical orange chicken, fried rice, spare ribs, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour soup. Along with the typical Chinese food you can also find muscles, oysters and baby octopus, for those with a daring flavor. For the faint of heart, they also have pizza and chicken wings.
At this point you may wonder where the Mongolian Grill comes into play. Vegas offers the options to build your own bowl. You walk to the counter and select your protein, veggies, sauce, and seasoning. Grab a number and watch as your meal is freshly prepared in front of you. It’s a bit of a guessing game when choosing your ingredients because they don’t have them labeled.
For all the sushi lovers out there, they also offer a sushi bar, though it wasn’t available when I went so I didn’t have the privilege of testing it out.
From the wide variety of Asian and other food, I chose lo mein, beef and brocoli, a spare rib, orange chicken and some soft of mystery fish. Did I mention nothing was labeled? Making matters worse, the communication with the staff was well short of fluent.
The next day, it was apparent that the house had won on Friday the 13th. I'm not going to be too graphic here. I think that's all I need to write. Well, that and be wary of the mystery fish.
Perhaps I should have asked for my fortune cookie at the beginning. Oh well. Vegas offers a golden punch card that rewards you with a free meal after you purchase 10. Of course, it might not cover the increased health care premiums you’re likely to pay.
