On the surface, this picture is pretty mundane. Is it worth a thousand words? Actually, yeah, but I'm not going to spend that many on it. Maybe 450.
First, the main action of the photo is the gentleman spraying the brick. That's significant for a couple of reasons. The brick in question is the newly placed brick on the exterior of the coming Dichotomy coffee bar on Austin Avenue. Specifically, it's in the 500 block. We're looking forward to this place opening, which looks like it might happen sometime in September.
But why is he spraying the brick? If I were one of those people who just carries on as if I know everything, I would automatically spout something like "Well, it's so hot right now that if they don't spray the brick, the mortar will dry out too fast and it will crumble." Do you know these kinds of people? The ones who just say a bunch of BS and do it so confidently that you feel like you have to believe them?
Anyway, I don't know why he's spraying the brick, but I'm sure it's necessary.
The other question that occurs to me about this photo concerns the space available next door to Dichotomy. As far as I know it's still up for grabs. I heard about one place that looked into it, but I will not reveal that information at this time.
Instead, I will list five things I would like to see go here (please understand that I have no info on this, I'm just daydreaming).
1) Gastropub. The simple definition of this would be a pub with a restaurant. But I think the connotation these days is that it's a pub that serves food worthy of attracting foodies.
2) Breakfast all day and night. Think about it: pancakes or an omelet for dinner and then bump next door for coffee and/or spirits.
3) Taco Deli. I mean specifically the Austin restaurant of this name. It's not going to happen. There are a bunch of taco restaurants coming to town, but none of them are as good as Taco Deli. When it comes to fine tacos, nothing is as good as Taco Deli. This is my opinion and I stand by it absolutely. If a Taco Deli came in here, it would give downtown a huge boost in mid-day pedestrian traffic.
4) Pizza/Italian. Wouldn't a downtown Poppa Rollo's be cool?
5) Froyo. Why don't we have any froyo places? Just kidding.
5 for real) Indian. I thought about leaving Indian food out of this list, but I can't help it. We still need a definitively Indian food establishment.
