If WacoFork ever fields a baseball team — or more likely a slow-pitch softball team — there's no doubt who our ringer will be.
Soon after we launched WacoFork in April, former Baylor and current Fort Worth Cats pitcher Wade Mackey jumped on board. Before he left to join the Cats in early May, he wrote a healthy helping of reviews and has continued to support our site. I ran into Wade on Saturday night as he made the trip down to Waco after pitching the Cats to an 8-3 win over the Amarillo Sox.
As soon as I saw him, I realized I had failed to take his advice that I check out the Oso burrito at Taqueria El Crucero. So I rectified that situation on Tuesday.
Upon arrival at El Crucero, I asked the nice lady behind the counter for an El Oso burrito. She laughed and asked me who told me to get that. I said my friend Wade and she giggled some more and said "So, then, you want green sauce on it."
That was right.
El Oso is the burrito pictured along with this blog. I have a feeling it is called El Oso because of its girth, which is considerable. I was unable to finish it as I possess neither the height, frame nor high metabolism of Mr. Mackey.
Nonetheless, it was delicious and the green sauce was a nice addition. I was warned that it was spicy and indeed it was. But that kind of satisfying spiciness where an initial tanginess is followed by a rising flushness in the sinuses. I sweated underneath my eyes, but I never felt an urgent need to douse my tongue.
Honestly, I don't know if I would've happened across El Crucero had it not been for Wade's suggestion. It's on Robinson Drive about a mile toward Robinson from the famous traffic circle. Not an area I drive through very often.
But now I will. Nice pitch, Mackey.
