Well, friends, we did it. Our little Gut Pak has achieved national fame as the Cooking Channel College Eats Bracket Challenge Champion.
We at WacoFork had a fun time being a part of it from the beginning. I was in Austin three weeks ago having a little taste of SXSW when Julie Keith from Vitek's texted and emailed to let me know the Gut Pak was going to be part of this deal. At the time I thought "this will make a fun thing to blog about on Monday."
Little did I know, the Gut Pak's journey through the bracket would become a highlight for all of us throughout March Madness.
Let's look at this through the wide-angle lens. While the Baylor men's basketball team was plowing through the NIT and the Lady Bears had controversy descend upon them in a crazy upset loss against Louisville, the good old Gut Pak just kept winning.
Vitek's, representing Baylor, knocked off the N.C. State Mimi's Sausage Dip in the first round, then felled another ACC dish by defeating the Duke Greek Devil's Gyro in the Sweet 16. In the Elite 8, the Gut Pak sliced up the Illinois Stuffed Pizza and it was on to the Final Four.
In the semifinals, the Gut Pak scored one for Texas supremacy by ousting Montana's offering, a breakfast burrito of all things. And then it was on to the championship.
On Thursday and Friday, Facebook and Twitter began to light up with reminders to vote early and often for the Gut Pak. Anyone connected to Waco and social media couldn't escape the College Eats madness. As a result, Vitek's Gut Pak received more than 15,000 votes to edge out Milwaukee's Real Chili's The Marquette.
And that's how you win a championship. Or at least that's how the Gut Pak did it.
Congratulations!
There is a party and Gut Pak discounts on the way to celebrate the win. I exchanged texts with Keith this morning and she said she will let us know the details via Twitter and Facebook in the very near future.
