Going out downtown? Hit Clay Pot or Bangkok

As we roll into what promises to be a wonderful weekend, I have a thought on the goings on in Waco and how you might be able to augment your weekend scene.

Consider this an extension of our "How 'bout" series.

There's definitely no shortage of entertainment options in the downtown/Baylor area today and tomorrow. One thing we have our eye on is the Dancing of the Stars of Waco event happening tonight at the Convention Center. I'll be honest, I don't know what the ticket situation is on this deal, but I'll try to update this blog later today if you're interested in attending. (Actually, I just found the info — it's $85 per seat. So I'm guessing you already know if you're going or not.)

Also happening this weekend is Baylor's Sing, which I'm pretty sure is sold out for all of its performances. And at noon on Saturday, the Baylor Lady Bears host rival Texas in a game that might sell out as well.

My point is that many of you could be attending at least one of these events. And I'm guessing you're going to be doing some dining out along the way. Want my recommendations for downtown/Baylor dining? Bangkok Royal or Clay Pot

Here's why:

Clay Pot serves fantastic Vietnamese cuisine, including but not limited to traditional Vietnamese soup (Pho), fried rice, banh mi and an impressive variety of vegetarian options, in an elegant-yet-casual setting. The restaurant in the red-and-yellow building near the Baylor campus has been family owned and operated for 20 years.

We recommend … dumplings as a starter or, even better, fried dumplings.

Bangkok Royal is Waco's premiere Thai food restaurant offers top notch cuisine in an elegant setting ideal for anything from take out to a a casual lunch to formal celebratory dinners. Open since 2000,Bangkok Royal has established itself as one of the area's favorite restaurants of any kind.

It's great for … Just about anything from a casual lunch to a fancy dinner. You will be as comfortable in shorts and a T-shirt as you will in your dress-up clothes before a graduation. When you first dine at Bangkok Royal, you might think of it as semi-fine dining, but the more you go there, the more you'll see it as comfort food.
