It occurs to me that as much as I love to watch sports at a sports bar or at the pub, when it comes to the most high-profile game of the year, it's like Christmas morning — it feels like it should be celebrated in someone's home.
In the last 10 years, it's also become somewhat of a tradition to make chili or something in that realm for Super Bowl eats. My friend Jeremy and I began making homemade gut paks a while back, but that evolved into his Jeremy's World Famous Chili from Wisconsin when he moved to Milwaukee for a couple of years.
So is it better to cook or order delivery?
I'm sure everyone has seen this by now, but Papa John's is offering a chance to win a free pizza by correctly calling the pregame coin toss. But I just read the particulars of the contest, and I've got to say it might be missing the mark. Let's say you go to papajohns.com and vote either heads or tails and get it right. If that happens, then Papa John's will email you a promotional code on Monday to use for the free pizza. So the idea they seem to be presenting — win a free pizza to eat during the Super Bowl — is completely misleading.
I'm glad I won't be manning the phones at Papa John's on Sunday evening as I'm sure there are going to be a whole lot of dumb bunnies calling in and saying "I called heads and I want my free pizza." Actually I would imagine Papa John's is banking on some of those clever people just deciding to order a pizza while they're on the phone with Papa John's.
Will it work? Sounds like an interesting blog for next week, huh?
If you are going to pick up or order something for your Super Bowl watching, let me make a suggestion. Nothing against Papa John's, because I ordered pizza from there during the conference championship games two weeks ago, but we have a few options around here. Poppa Rollo's, Rosati's and Baris come immediately to mind.
And one more heads up in case you're going to the cooking route — the grocery is crazy crowded and picked over on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon. Go early.
