I don't know if this qualifies as Waco's best kept secret, because nobody associated with the El Crucero Taco Truck @ Common Grounds is trying to keep it secret. But it still kind of feels that way.
That's because it's a fantastic place to have a delicious breakfast burrito — and now street tacos as well — in an atmosphere that's both comfortable and dynamic. But the line is never very long, unlike another brand new local burrito eatery that has a line that extends out the front door at lunch time (Freebirds).
Well, long lines or not, both Blake Batson of Common Grounds and Jesus Betancourt of Crucero continue to be enthusiastic about the partnership. On Monday, they decided to adjust the hours to serve breakfast burritos from 7-11 in the morning and street tacos from 7-11 in the evening. Eventually, they want to expand the evening menu to include virtually everything that's available at Crucero's main location.
My friend Brian Patterson is in town recording an album at my house (310 Sound Studios, Waco's Muscle Shoals). So last night I picked up a dozen street tacos — six barbacoa and six pastor — and they hit the spot.
So let's get the word out. There's no reason for this to be a secret. We're all just cool kids eating Crucero tacos at Common Grounds.
One more bite: The photo with this blog features the mural on the back side of the Crucero truck. Our friend and brilliant artist Erin Dobbins painted it, wonderfully capturing the escense of hanging out at Common Grounds.
