In an effort to make this taqueria adventure more effective, I'm making myself venture to some taquerias that are out of my usual rotation.
Don't misunderstand, I'm going to hit El Crucero at least once. But it's a good opportunity to get around a little bit. Today that meant a swim through Taqueria Zacatecas.
Zacatecas, one of the most-often mentioned spots among taco stand lovers, reminded me of the good old days when I lived in Fort Worth. My friend Shawn Skeen told me about these taco stands near where we lived. He said you just placed your order at the window and sat outside. It sounded interesting, but not interesting enough to make me try it at that time.
This was long before I was introduced to the fantastic concept of food trucks. In those days, my regrettable usual dinner consisted of a burger and cookies-n-cream milkshake late at night after I covered a ball game.
A few years later, here in Waco, friends introduced me to the taco trucks on La Salle. Taco trucks don't fit my preferred dining style. I like to give my order to a waiter or waitress and then engage in conversation with friends in a comfortable environment. But I understand the appeal of the taco trucks, especially to cash-light college students.
In that sense, Zacatecas is ideal. I spent less than $5 on two brisket tacos, a chicken fajita taco and a coke. It's a little warm to dine outside these days, but at least Zacatecas offered shade.
