As American as softball and a Vitek's Gut Pak

As American as softball and a Vitek's Gut Pak

It's time to celebrate our independence, Americans.

I'm not sure how the signers of the Declaration of Independence intended for us to do that, but eating barbecue and watching baseball seems to be the standard. And as luck would have it, I've found a really great way to do it in our town.

My friend T.C. Brown recently alerted me to Vitek's presence as the concession stand vendor at the Lake Air Little League ball fields. If there's a more perfect Waco-originated ball field food than a Vitek's Gut Pak, I'm not aware of it.

As someone who grew up and then came back to work in Waco, summer at Little League games has been a staple here for better and worse.

Part of me finds pleasant nostalgia in Little League games in midsummer, especially at the Lake Air fields. I spent many nights in my youth leaning on the fences at these parks, cheering on my all-star friends as they battled our cross-town rivals for 12-year-old baseball supremacy and bragging rights that would be established for years to come. This is also where I learned that it was safe and fun to flirt with baseball players' girlfriends.

On the flip side, I mostly detested covering Little League for the newspaper when I worked there. I won't go into the reasons why so that I won't offend anyone.

Either way, a Vitek's Gut Pak would have enhanced the experience.

There are city tournament all-star softball games at Lake Air Little League fields on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so if this strikes you as a fun way to spend part of the weekend, well, now you know.

Happy Independence Day from WacoFork.
