What About Cupcakes? Tasty question.

I know that cupcakes are considered a trendy bakery item, but really, how can a mini cake ever go out of style? It’s good to know that Waco offers a bakery that focuses all their efforts on cupcakes. The sad part is that I had never even visited What About Cupcakes? before Thursday, but I’ll be sure to go back again.

I consider myself to be a cupcake aficionado — I’ve been baking cupcakes since I could read the directions on the back of a Funfetti cake mix box. Also, I should add that even though it’s not really classy or foodie of me to admit, the frosting is my favorite part, and I think that some cupcake bakers tend to forget about that. If the frosting didn’t matter, I would eat a muffin, for goodness sake. (Please note that I am not a muffin hater. I just made some great sweet potato muffins last week … though I did dip one into some leftover cream cheese frosting that was in the fridge. Arrest me, breakfast police.)

However, I’m happy to report that the frosting is not a problem at What About Cupcakes?. I went with my roommate, and we ordered two different cupcakes, carrot cake and strawberry, that the lady behind the counter recommended as popular flavors. They were also offering German chocolate, plain chocolate, and vanilla, but we really didn’t have the pancreases to order more than one cupcake a piece.

The strawberry frosting on the strawberry cupcake was amazing — it tasted like strawberry without that overpowering sweetness that frostings can sometimes have. The cake part wasn’t quite as strawberry-packed as I would have hoped, but the frosting definitely made up for it. The carrot cake was great, and the spices in the cake felt warm and homey, like a good carrot cake should. The cream cheese frosting balanced out the semi-nutrition of the cake, and it had a cute little carrot in frosting on top. The bakery’s flavors vary on a daily basis, and I saw that they have margarita cupcakes on one day that I’d really like to try.

In addition to regular sized cupcakes, they have minis!  If you don’t want an entire cupcake, or if you wanted to try a few different flavors, they’re perfect. I saw a couple of women making orders for personalized cupcakes when I was in there, and I think it’s great to have a local place where you can order cupcakes rather than getting the pre-packaged stuff at the grocery store. We waited until we got home to dive into our cupcakes, but the bakery also has a fairly large area for sitting and enjoying cupcakes.

A final comment from my roommate: “This place feels like the inside of a cupcake!”  What could be better?
