If you've enjoyed The Week of the Sandwich so far, then I'm glad. From my end, it's been a huge success as it's pushed me to explore a portion of the wide variety of sandwiches we have here in Waco.
After beginning the week with a pair of deli sandwiches, I've gone on to dine on Philly, barbecue and today a Vietnamese sandwiche at Clay Pot. Specifically the beef banh mi.
I learned something as well. Banh mi is the term given to the bread, specifically baguettes brought to Vietnam by the French. So when I first ate a banh mi at Club Sandwich and told friends how I enjoyed the banh mi sandwich, I was essentially saying that I liked the sandwich sandwich.
Now I know better.
I met my buddy Jon Davis at Clay Pot today as he participated in The Week of the Sandwich by ordering banh mi as well. While I had banh mi beef, he had his with meat balls, which I believe he called "the jam." Yes. Well put.
Clay Pot offers banh mi with pork, beef, chicken, tofu and meat balls. The meat (or tofu) in the baguette is the core of the sandwich, but it's well accompanied by cilantro, carrots, cucumbers, kiwi and the like. I chose to 86 the cucumbers because I don't like them, but have yours as you will.
Of course I'm not going to stop there as long as there's potential to add hot sauce. Sriracha sauce that is. Some people call it rooster sauce because of the rooster on the bottle. Is it good on banh mi. Does a rooster strut?
One more bite: Clay Pot will be hosting a Chinese New Year party on Saturday night from 7 p.m. to midnight-ish. The event will include free food, wine, games and prizes.
