I love living in Waco. Not many places I'd rather be.
I hope you appreciate the uniqueness of this sentiment because I seem to hear a different story quite often. Whenever I hear people put down Waco, I believe they're doing it to make themselves sound cool. This all reminds me of the Beach Boys song "Be True To Your School."
I mean it though, especially as a weekend like this weekend approaches. And by "approaches" I mean beginning in just a few hours. Perhaps suggesting that the weekend is going to begin on Wednesday night makes me seem like a hard-partying college frat boy. If that's what you think, then a) cut me some slack or b) please withhold judgement until you've read my list of suggested things to do.
I present to you a list of "Things I Think You Should Do This Weekend."
(Note that not every one of these items is directly tied to a restaurant, for example the Baylor vs. Oklahoma football game on Saturday night. The commonality on the list is that if you take my advice, I believe there's a good chance you will end up feeling as good about living in Waco as I do.
And note that not every one of these items appeals to all ages and tastes. I'll leave it to you to discern which ones might be right for you.)
Here we go:
ψ Check out Ancient Cats Society with guest Lomelda at University Baptist Church tonight. Show starts at 8 and it's free, though concert-goers are encouraged to bring 5 canned foods for admission. This is where I'm starting the weekend.
ψ If we really wanted to be rock stars, we could pre-game this gig by going for a pitcher of beer and a chicken fried steak at Lone Star Tavern.
ψ If you haven't already, or if it's been a while, eat a breakfast of a Taqueria El Crucero breakfast burrito and a coffee at Common Grounds.
ψ But also, go to El Crucero, like I did on Wednesday and enjoy huevos rancheros (as seen in the picture with this blog) or one of their Oso items. You know, to support the Bears.
ψ Go see "The Seven Year Itch" at the Waco Civic Theatre, playing Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30.
ψ Go see music by Drew Holcomb and Jillian Edwards at Common Grounds beginning at 8 Thursday night.
ψ Treat yourself to something new at Waco's only Puerto Rican restaurant, Cafe Viejo San Juan.
ψ Treat yourself to something intrinsically Texan, the high school football playoffs. For a complete list of possibilities, check out the Waco Tribune-Herald sports section.
ψ Chill out Saturday afternoon with a cup of Oso's Oh So Good Frozen Yogurt. Just go well before game time as it will be closed during the game.
ψ But that's not really a problem because you NEED to come tailgate with us outside Floyd Casey Stadium (look for the WacoFork banner) before going into the game to see Baylor knock off the Oklahoma Sooners.
ψ When you want to keep the fun going late either Friday or Saturday night, hit up bar-time burgers at Beatnix from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. (Oh and if you're a scream-o music fan who also wants to help out a good cause, Beatnix has you covered there too with the First Hope Benefit headlined by Untitled We Stand, starting at 6 and going until about 10:30 on Friday.)
ψ Download the WacoFork iPhone app and choose to eat somewhere you've never been.
ψ Then review that restaurant.
ψ Finally, on Sunday, call your mother.
