Beatnix carefully practices art of the cheeseburger

I ate a cheeseburger at lunch today.

This is not news or even interesting. Where I ate the cheeseburger might be slightly more interesting, but still not astonishingly so. However, my revelation about the cheeseburger just might resonate with some people.

Beatnix made my cheeseburger today. Specifically, Penney made it. To my specifications, she made it with swiss cheese, mushrooms and grilled onions as these are the trappings of the mushroom burger which I ordered.

Now, I've not yet developed the food critic's ability to articulate the nuances of what I like about a cheeseburger. I can only express my sadness at looking down at my cheeseburger basket, then remembering I had just eaten the final morsel of my cheeseburger. I resigned to popping another tater tot in my mouth. That's no knock on the tater tots at Beatnix, it's just that somehow my mind had tricked itself into believing there was one more bite of beef and bun and toppings.

This is not how I feel when I finish a fast food burger. So, therefore, perhaps if I'm going to eat a cheeseburger I should only eat carefully made ones at local establishments. This probably seems obvious to some of you.

We could all probably have a lively debate about which local purveyor of cheeseburgers makes the best one. Just last week, one restaurant owner invited me to try his new recipe for cheeseburgers and it was remarkably good. But I seem to have as much difficulty picking between cheeseburgers as a mother might have choosing between her children. Maybe we should, or more to the point, you the WacoFork nation should attempt to reach a consensus on the best cheeseburger in town. I would merely like to provide the forum, but I will say that the Beatnix cheeseburger needs to be in the conversation.

Because I was sad when my cheeseburger was all gone today.

One more bite: Notice how Beatnix's sign promotes "cafe, culture, community." They are able to boast this because they host things like live music on a regular basis and open-mic poetry night on Wednesdays. This Saturday, Beatnix will host the Pink Floyd tribute band Beat To A Pulp. Doors will open at 8 p.m. with the show starting about 9 p.m. There will be a $7 cover charge and it's BYOB.
