Off The Cob (insert your own corny headline)

Once upon a blissful time, I spent a pre-teen afternoon at my grandparents house gorging myself on flavored popcorn, chocolate cupcakes and root beer

I actually gave myself an upset stomach. A snack hangover if you will. Not to worry, though, I recovered in time to play golf with my granddad that evening.

I write that to write this, it has recently come to my attention that I could recreate that afternoon, if I wanted to, right here in town thanks to What About Cupcakes or The Olive Branch and the newly discovered Off The Cob Popcorn (they've been open since May and went into the WacoFork listings this week).

So I didn't consume any cupcakes or root beer on Wednesday, but I did stop by Off The Cob to peruse all the snack goodness they have to offer. Imagine all the flavors one might find at a snow cone stand, but applied to popcorn.

Haley Pierce, whose family owns the local popcorn hot spot, brought me samples of both sweet and savory popcorn. Part of the purpose of this exercise was to allow me to wrap my head around the idea of cheesecake, Dr Pepper and margarita popcorn.

Pierce said the sweet popcorns, particularly cheesecake and margarita, are fan favorites. As for me, I don't think I completely get it. They were sweet and tasty, but they tasted more like taffy than popcorn. I like caramel popcorn, though admittedly not as much as just plain buttered or, mmmm, cheese popcorn. That's no knock on Off The Cob, it just puts me in the savory category, I guess.

I bought a bag of loaded potato popcorn, but didn't immediately dive into it as yesterday's blog concerning the closing of Garrett's took over my afternoon.

However, after my public night concluded, having properly celebrated the Rangers' Game 4 ALCS victory with a beer at The Dancing Bear, I arrived home to find that bag of loaded potato popcorn calling my name.

Relax, I didn't eat the whole bag. But, then, I didn't say how big of a bag it was, did I? OK, I ate a responsible amount. I actually showed restraint, because I could've kept going. You're going to have to trust me on this.

Here's what I now think, a bag of popcorn is a good thing to have handy at the end of the day. Sometimes a day can leave you with a taste in your mouth, so why not battle that aftertaste with delicious popcorn? (I'm not sure how this will affect the size of my belly and overall health, but I'll keep you posted).
