What to expect at Louisiana Catfish & Chicken

Let me begin this blog by identifying the items in the photo, which was taken at Louisiana Catfish & Chicken on Tuesday.

Front and center are alligator tail nuggets, behind them to the left are hush puppies, which were maybe the best hush puppies I've ever tasted, and back right are catfish tails. This was the lunch my friend Kaley Eggers and I enjoyed, dining in at LC&C.

We also learned a few things that can be passed along to those of you who first heard about LC&C on our site a couple weeks ago. I don't make a habit of reviewing restaurants on this blog and this is not to be confused with a review. I already stated I liked the hush puppies and I liked the gator tails, but try them for yourself and write a review. I simply want you to know what to expect when you decide to try LC&C.

  • First of all, think of LC&C as a food truck that just happens to be inside of a building. Plan on taking it to go as there is just one full booth along with two half booths. Eggers and I sat at a half booth facing out the window toward La Salle, so it was as if we were at a show and the show was cars driving on La Salle. I spoke with owner Lionel Randolph during our visit and he confirmed that the restaurant is intended more as a takeout joint.
  • The catfish tails have bones. Randolph said older folks like the bone-in tails because they like to scratch their gums with the bones. Gonna have to take his word for it on that one.
  • If you order a chicken breast sandwich — and I assume a wing sandwich, etc. — you will actually get a piece of fried chicken with bones in on a sandwich. We ran into two friends before leaving and one of them passed on that information.
  • If you order a tails basket, you will get a catfish tails basket. If you want a gator tails basket, you need to specifically ask for gator tails.
  • They don't serve drinks, at least for now, so you'll need to buy your beverage at the convenience store next door.

Now, I realize these bullet points make LC&C seem unusual. But if you put it in context of a food truck, then it actually seems pretty logical. It's definitely different from other chicken and catfish establishments like Krispy Chicken, but variety is good for us and them.
