One More Bite

The WacoFork Blog

I feel like a proud parent today, and not just because my wife and I are having our 3rd child within the next 2 weeks. Today is a great day in WacoFork nation. Today is the day we can finally announce that the long-awaited WacoFork iPhone app is available for download in the App Store!

As a journalist, I'm supposed to be able to take a set of facts and put them in order of importance, which is called "inverted pyramid."

However, I have a set of news items related to West Rock Center in Hewitt and I don't want to be the judge of their levels of importance. Oh sure, I have an opinion, but I don't want that to get in the way right now. So I'm just going to spill these things out there and let you decide what's most important.

The sign on the front door of Sebas Cocina read "Coming Soon" on Tuesday morning.

Cryptic.

WacoFork learned on Monday that the restaurant was leaving downtown to supposedly pursue other opportunities in Dallas. But by Tuesday morning, the only information available was the aforementioned "Coming Soon" sign.

As I sat at my usual watering hole on a slow Sunday night, piddling on my phone as we are wont to do these days, I came across something on Twitter that made perfect sense.

One of those "Yes!" moments.

And so, I arrived at Common Grounds a little before 9 a.m. to be there for the debut of Taqueria El Crucero breakfast burritos served at that location.

The dining options in downtown Waco dwindled slightly over the weekend as Billy Garrett opted to close Garrett's Casual Fine Dining.

Garrett, who will continue to run Secret Chef, said he made the decision about a week ago and closed Garrett's on Saturday.

The problem, he said, was plain and simple — not enough traffic.

I've been known to hop in my car and drive more than two hours into the hill country to eat at the pit-barbecue hot spot known as Llano, Texas, home of the original Cooper's.

In fact, I even wrote about Cooper's during the summer while my dad and I were playing golf just down the road in San Saba, Texas.

Well, I have good news, because if the folks opening up a new barbecue joint in McGregor can pull off what they're hoping to pull off, then those of who love places like Cooper's won't have to drive nearly as far.

Rumors circulated again on Monday that Fat Ho Burgers was closed.

The rumor reached me as I was sitting at the Elite watching Game 3 of the Rangers-Rays American League Divisional Series. And since I had heard such rumors before only to drive past Fat Ho and find it alive and kicking, I did not leave my perch at the Elite bar. The Rangers were in the midst of hanging on for dear life.

Nonetheless I checked it out this morning and indeed found the Fat Ho doors barred and locked.

There was a time when Bill & Bob's virtually cornered Waco's burger-joint market.

There was a time when, wherever you found yourself in Waco, a Bill & Bob's could be found close by. There was a time, even as recently as this summer, when this writer sat down with a cheeseburger at Bill & Bob's and grew nostalgic for those bygone times.

But now Bill & Bob's, as a restaurant at least, is closed.

It's parents weekend at Baylor this weekend, and we all know what that means. Mom and dad are in town to pay for dinner! So we thought we'd make a few suggestions to help show you Baylor parents what Waco has to offer. By the way, check out our ad in the latest issue of the Lariat. It's right next to the Sudoku puzzle in the sports page.

It's a double blog day because I came across some news this afternoon in Temple.

Word on the street for a while has been that BJ's Brewhouse is planning a Waco location. I even saw someone post that BJ's "announced" it was coming to Waco on Tuesday.
