Common Grounds finds ideal spot for Crucero truck

Once upon a time, on the first cool morning of the fall, I sat on the back porch at Common Grounds and enjoyed a big, warm, bacon-egg-and-cheese breakfast taco with a little bit of that super spicy green sauce that Taqueria El Crucero seems to make a little better than any other place in town.

Then someone blew the whistle on that operation.

So Crucero put together a food truck and parked it alongside Common Grounds. But then someone else (I'm looking at you, Pizza Hut) cried foul on that.

Well, I'm pleased to say that Common Grounds and Crucero have found a way to make it work, probably permanently this time, as the Crucero truck will open on Friday morning in its own little corner of the Baylor/Common Grounds universe. The plan is for the truck to be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, with the possibility of expanding hours for events.

AND PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PART: the first 100 customers at the Crucero truck on Friday morning will get a FREE breakfast taco.

Kimberly Batson texted me with the news earlier this week and she included a picture of the Crucero truck in its new home. Common Grounds has annexed the building next door, formerly the site of Harts n Crafts, and is working on a new ice cream joint to be called Heritage Creamery. To that end, they've built a back porch to serve both the Crucero truck and the creamery.

Kimberly described all the plans for making the porch area a proper hang-out space — benches and umbrellas and the like, all fitting the outdoors-ie feel. Of course, Common Grounds has been a good spot for a meet-up for a long time, but they're definitely upping their game with the taco truck and the creamery.

There's no eta yet on Heritage Creamery. My broad, general guess is sometime later this year, probably not by the end of the spring semester. More info on this as it develops.
